The effect of the "metropolitan voting" on voting behaviour in the 2021 Czech legislative election
Vratný, Radek ; Lepič, Martin (advisor) ; Mikešová, Renáta (referee)
This thesis examines one of the factors underlying voting behaviour in the last Czech legislative election to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2021. It explains the differences between composite and contextual research approaches and then focuses on the possible identification and demonstration of the metropolitan voting effect, which can be considered as a subcategory of the contagion effect. Given the lack of attention to this phenomenon in the literature to date, the paper summarizes and partially innovates the conceptualization of this phenomenon. The contagion effect, also called the neighbourhood effect, refers to a situation where people revise their voting behaviour under the direct or indirect influence of the prevailing stances and opinions of people moving or living in a defined area. Then they vote based on this revision, thus their individual characteristics, which are addressed by the composite approach, have less influence on them than would be expected. This paper attempts to demonstrate the effect of metropolitan voting in two metropolitan areas, Prague and Ostrava, using the statistical methods of multiple linear regression and spatial autocorrelation. Multiple regression works with many data at the level of municipalities and city districts...
Media Image of Media Candidates for the Prime Minister before the Elections to the Chamber of Deputies of Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2021
Jiskrová, Simona ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Turková, Kateřina (referee)
This thesis focuses on the media image of Andrej Babiš, Petr Fiala and Ivan Bartoš in the daily newspapers Mladá fronta DNES, Hospodářské noviny and Právo in the time before the Elections to the Chamber of Deputies of Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2021. The aim of the paper is to find out whether and how the media image of these three politicians, as the most likely candidates for the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, differed in these newspapers. In the theoretical part, key theoretical backgrounds are presented concerning the relationship between media and reality, agenda setting theory, as well as the principles of media logic, requirements for media products and media owner's influences on media image. The methodological part characterizes the research methods used, which include quantitative content analysis and visual framing. The output of the thesis is an analytical section with a presentation of the obtained results and a final chapter that is devoted to a discussion of the results with the literature, their interpretation and the limitations of the research. The Newton database was used to obtain the necessary data for the thesis.

Vliv vynaložených finančních prostředků na výsledky voleb
Novák, Ondřej
This bachelor thesis deals with the quantification of the influence of spent funds on the results of elections in the Czech Republic and political marketing. The aim is to evaluate the relationship between finances and votes obtained in elections. The first part explains the concepts of political marketing. Subsequently, data from the presidential, senate and parliamentary elections to the European Parliament and the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic are statistically processed. These data are commented and subsequently also transferred to the general level of elections in the Czech Republic. Recommendations are also made for setting up a successful election campaign.
"Unser Weg hat erst begonnen!" The political rise of Sebastian Kurz and political profiling of Austrian People's Party under his leadership
HOTOVÝ, Jakub
The diploma thesis deals with the political rise of Sebastian Kurz and his influence on the Austrian People's Party, which he took over as a leader in May 2017. The primary aim of the thesis is to analyse the factors that led to Kurz's steep career growth and to subsequent electoral success. The first part will focus on the political development of the current leader of the ÖVP and will describe his actions as Secretary of State for Integration and Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs. The subsequent change in the presidency of the ÖVP caused an unprecedented change in voter preferences, from which the People's Party benefited with victories in the 2017 and 2019 National Council elections. The mentioned parliamentary elections will be analysed in the light of the ÖVP election campaign and the role of its leader. In the final part, I will focus on the two subsequent cabinets under the Kurz's leadership and the question of the extent to which the party identifies with its leader or how both coalition governments of the People's Party with two ideologically different parties influenced the ÖVP profile.
The Friends and Neighbours Effect and Its Relevance to Voting Behaviour in Czech Parliamentary Elections
Pileček, Radek
Voter decision-making about which political party to support in the elections is a very complex process. One of the key factors influencing our voting behaviour is the effect of particular candidates in terms of their local activities. Many Czech and also foreign studies show that candidates gain significantly higher preferences in the municipality of their residence and its surroundings. Within the analyzed parliamentary elections, this is reflected not only by the territorial concentration of preferential votes, but also by higher local electoral support of the political parties or movements represented by these candidates. This diploma thesis examines, among other things, differences in the strength of the described effect (technically called the friends and neighbours effect) between candidates from different political parties and in different regions of Czechia. Quantitative research has shown greater local strength and spatial extent of friends and neighbours effect for leading candidates from non-metropolitan areas who have experiences from local or regional politics, such as mayors or regional councilors. In the 2017 parliamentary elections, the friends and neighbours effect mostly influenced the spatial patterns of electoral support of the KDU-ČSL and the STAN movement and on the other...
Populism and persuasive propaganda in Czech party system
Kharisova, Kamilla ; Shavit, Anna (advisor) ; Rosenfeldová, Jana (referee)
This diploma thesis aims to study populist statements that appear in the advertising campaigns of political parties during the pre-election period. The main idea is to examine the discourse of this phenomenon during parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic held in 2017. The aim of the work is to identify and describe the use of populist elements in nine political entities that passed the 5% clause. Our work is based on the theory of populism as a marketing strategy by Winder and Tenscher (2012). Since populism is a widespread phenomenon, we wanted to show that it permeates through every political party, whether populist or not. The diploma thesis uses content analysis of outdoor and television advertisements of political parties. This study concludes that populism is a very popular and well-functioning concept whose elements can be applied by practically any political actor. Key words: Populism, parliamentary elections, political communication, Czech Republic Title: Populism as political communication
Changes in socio-demographic characteristics of ANO voters and the territorial aspect of support in 2013-2017
Sviták, Matyáš ; Dvořák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Coufalová, Linda (referee)
SVITÁK, Matyáš. Proměna sociodemografických charakteristik voličů hnutí ANO a teritoriálního aspektu podpory v letech 2013-2017. Praha, 2022. 54 s. Bakalářská práce (Bc). Univerzita Karlova, Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut sociologických studií, Katedra sociologie. Vedoucí bakalářské práce Mgr. Tomáš Dvořák, Ph.D. Abstract The bachelor thesis deals with the change of socio-demographic, life-value variables and territorial aspects of electoral support for the ANO movement between 2013 and 2017. It is divided into three parts - theoretical, methodological and analytical. The theoretical part presents the most important features of populism, which are subsequently identified in the electoral strategy of the ANO movement. The movement's strategy is further discussed in detail; attention is also paid to past research on the characteristics of ANO voters. The methodological and analytical part focuses on the secondary analysis of data from the ESS international research project (specifically from 2014 and 2018). To determine changes in the characteristics of ANO voters between these two years, a series of analyses (chi-square tests, t-tests, binary logistic regression) were conducted using SPSS software to reveal the answers to the research questions - namely, in what ways do voters differ most, in what ways are...
Spatial Analysis of Czech Parliamentary Election: Comparison of Spatial Econometrics and Machine Learning
Černý, Jakub ; Šťastná, Lenka (advisor) ; Gregor, Martin (referee)
This thesis analyses the results of the Czech Parliamentary election in 2021 and attempts to explain the voting support of major political subjects by using aggregate data from Czech municipalities. Since the data evince spatial autocorrelation, it is necessary to specify a suitable spatial model. The thesis provides both empirical and economic evidence for the Spatial Durbin Error Model, which enables distinguishing the direct and indirect effects of particular independent variables and accounts for the spatial dependence of error terms. This method shows that variables describing the socio-economic characteristics of inhabitants, such as the share of entrepreneurs or people with university education, play the most significant role in explaining voting results and evince mostly the direct effects. On the contrary, variables describing municipalities, such as public spending or infrastructure, are more likely to impact the election result indirectly. Subsequently, the analysis is replicated using two tree-based machine learning algorithms and all models are evaluated based on their ability to predict the election results from unseen data. Even though machine learning methods estimate only relative variable importance instead of standard coefficients, this approach represents a perspective...
Negotiations on the executive coalition after parliamentary elections in 2017 in the Czech Republic
Kornetová, Kateřina ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Brunclík, Miloš (referee)
This thesis deals with the political situation in the Czech Republic since the parliamentary elections in October 2017 till the successful vote on the government's confidence in July 2018. It focuses specifically on the relations between the political parties, the reasons for refusing cooperation with the winner of the elections, and the motives for a participation on the executive coalition. Emphasis is placed on the parliamentary actors who have fundamentally influenced the emergence of the government. Furthermore, the work clarifies the social environment and important events during the period that was related to the coalition negotiations. At the same time, the text focuses on the role of the President in the formation of the government. Since he is the first directly elected president, the thesis tries to answer the question whether there are visible differences between the two previous indirectly elected presidents of the Czech Republic and current president Miloš Zeman. The thesis also examines the breadth of presidential powers over the government and seeks a possible overrun of powers. The main objective of the work is to verify whether the president extends his power beyond the constitution. For this purpose is uses the comparison of realities with the Constitution of the Czech Republic,...
